Cytokines are a class of signaling molecules or intercellular mediators (proteins, peptides, and glycoproteins) that primarily affect cells of the immune system; however they can affect various cell types outside of the immune system. They differ from classical hormones in that they are produced by a number of tissue or cell types rather than by specialized glands. The effects of cytokines on cells can yield different outcomes. Some cytokines cause cell proliferation, while others may cause chemotaxis between cell types, and others can even cause cell death.
