With the recent COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in publications using human airway epithelial (HAE) cells to model SARS-CoV-2 infectivity, pathogenesis and treatment. These include the use of Corning® Transwell® permeable supports to create air-liquid interface (ALI) epithelium cultures and Corning Matrigel® to generate airway tissue-like organoids. Both ALI and organoid models provide greater physiological relevance versus conventional cell culture and are proving to be useful tools in COVID-19 research. This Application Note discusses 3D cell culture models in coronavirus research and includes a summary of recently published articles related to COVID-19.
